R.J. Belk Store
Designated October 6, 1987
The R.J. Belk Store was established soon after the founding of the first and second Belk Stores in Monroe and Charlotte (both of whose original buildings have long since been demolished). The building is likely the oldest Belk Store structure in existence.
Building underwent restoration in 1974 but much of the interior remains largely unaltered. The kitchen and bathroom facilities were installed sometime after.
A.W. Heath Commercial Complex
Designated on October 7, 1987
The A.W. Heath Company has one two and a half story building which dates from about 1898. To provide space for the growing mercantile trade, the one-story commercial was built in about 1903. A frame barn which housed a mill, at the rear of the block, was constructed in 1910 and renovated in 1983.
Waxhaw Railroad Bridge
Designated August 11, 1997
The bridge spans the former Seaboard Coastline. The original bridge was used for vehicle traffic up until 1941 when converted for pedestrian traffic only.
The bridge was heavily reconstructed in 2008 in coordination with the Town of Waxhaw and CSX Transportation.
Waxhaw Water Tower/Tank
Designated June 13, 2017
Constructed in 1941 the water tower played a key role in the water and sewer system. In 1954, Waxhaw Volunteer Fire Department was established and began drawing water from the tank. The Water Tower remained Waxhaw’s primary source of water through the 1980s. The tower/tank remained in use until new ground mounted tanks on Sims Road were completed. In 2011, the Town of Waxhaw gained ownership and the tower/tank was fully refurbished. Today, it is one of the most recognizable monuments of downtown Waxhaw.
